Why Is My Roof Losing Granules?
If you’ve noticed what looks like coarse black sand collecting in your gutters or at the bottom of your downspouts, you’re probably looking at asphalt shingle granules. While it’s normal for shingles to lose some granules over time, excessive granule loss can be an early warning sign that your roof is reaching the end of its life.
So how do you know the difference between normal aging and a roof that needs attention?
It starts with understanding what those granules actually do.
Why Asphalt Shingles Have Granules
The colored granules on asphalt shingles aren’t just there for appearance. They perform several important jobs.
Granules protect the asphalt beneath from damaging ultraviolet rays, help the shingles resist weathering, improve fire resistance, and contribute to the roof’s overall durability. Without that protective layer, shingles age much more quickly.
As shingles get older, it’s natural for some of those granules to gradually wear away.
Some Granule Loss Is Completely Normal
If you recently had a new roof installed, don’t be surprised if you notice a small amount of granules washing into the gutters after the first few rainstorms.
During manufacturing and installation, some loose granules remain on the surface of the shingles. Those loose particles typically wash away early in the roof’s life and are not usually a cause for concern.
Small amounts of granule loss throughout the life of the roof are also considered normal.
Age Is the Most Common Cause
The number one reason shingles begin losing granules is simple aging.
Minnesota roofs experience years of intense sunlight, heavy rain, hail, snow, ice, strong winds, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Those conditions slowly wear away the protective surface of the shingles.
As the roof ages, granule loss generally becomes more noticeable.
Hail Can Knock Granules Loose
Minnesota is no stranger to severe weather.
Hail doesn’t always create obvious holes in a roof, but it can damage the protective granule surface. Even moderate hailstorms may loosen granules or create impact marks that shorten the lifespan of the shingles.
If your area has recently experienced hail, it’s a good idea to have the roof professionally inspected, even if you don’t see leaks inside the home.
Poor Ventilation Can Speed Up Roof Aging
Many homeowners don’t realize that attic ventilation affects the life of their roof.
If excessive heat builds up in the attic during the summer, the shingles above can age faster than they normally would. Over time, this accelerated aging may contribute to increased granule loss and reduced roof life.
A healthy roofing system includes proper ventilation as well as quality shingles.
What Should You Do If You Notice Granules?
The first step is not to panic.
Finding a small amount of granules in your gutters doesn’t automatically mean you need a new roof.
However, if you’re seeing large amounts of granules, bald spots on the shingles, dark patches where the asphalt is exposed, curling shingles, cracked shingles, or signs of leaks inside the home, it’s time to have the roof inspected.
An experienced roofing contractor can determine whether the roof still has years of service remaining or whether replacement should be considered.
When Is It Time to Replace the Roof?
There usually isn’t one single event that signals it’s time for a new roof. Instead, roofing contractors evaluate the overall condition of the roofing system.
If widespread granule loss is occurring across large sections of the roof, shingles are becoming brittle, damage from hail or wind is significant, or multiple roofing issues are appearing at the same time, replacement often becomes the most cost-effective long-term solution.
Replacing the roof before leaks develop can also help prevent expensive damage to decking, insulation, drywall, and other parts of the home.
